Children don’t need to bring their own equipment, I’ll provided everything they need for the classes including the Raspberry Pi computers etc. (however, this may mean that we work in small groups at times). If the children do have their own computer and want to bring it in then they’re welcome to do so.
If the children don’t have their own Raspberry Pi and they begin to take an interest and they want their own, the best place to get them from is Element 14 (http://nz.element14.com/raspberrypi-boards) or RS Components (http://nz.rs-online.com/web/p/processor-microcontroller-development-kits/8968660/). As these are official distributors they normally have the lowest prices (and look out for special deals).
The best place to get a keyboard/mouse, USB, VGA/HDMI etc. cables from is the Recycle Centre – You can get them for as little as $2 and you’ll be reducing e-waste. You can also pick up a VGA monitor for around $5 but note that you will need to buy an interface to convert the HDMI signal to VGA (similar to the ones we use in class which can be bought for around $10 off Trademe). Alternatively, if you have a TV that can use an HDMI cable (or you’re lucky to find one at the Recycle Center) the Raspberry Pi can plug straight into that.
There are many different types Arduinos and the official ones can be relatively expensive (as much as a Raspberry Pi) but as it’s an open design, companies are able to make their own. The particular type we’re using in class is the Arduino Nano which is powerful, easy to use and can be bought for as little as $7 (I’ve been buying mine off Trademe from this seller http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listings.aspx?member=5261616).
Most of the components I use are relatively cheep (normally around $10 or under) so if the children have their own Pis/Arduinos and want to play with them at home they’re a good thing to save pocket money. A good place to get them from is Nicegear (https://nicegear.co.nz/) which have a really good range (and for Adafruit products for example you’ll save a lot on shipping by getting them from Nicegear), sometimes you can get them cheaper on Trademe so it’s worth checking.
I have no connection or loyalty to any seller. I buy from whoever has the things I’m looking for at the best quality and cheapest price.
